In the race to capitalize on AI hype, some companies promise more than they can deliver. One standout example is Builder.ai — a startup that marketed itself as an AI-driven app builder but ended up relying heavily on human developers behind the scenes. This is a case study in what happens when branding overtakes reality.

The Promise: Apps Built by AI, Not People

Builder.ai claimed it could create apps for clients using artificial intelligence, dramatically speeding up development and lowering costs. Their sleek marketing and $250 million in funding, including backing from Microsoft, added to the illusion of a scalable AI business.

Customers were led to believe:

  • AI would understand their app ideas
  • Apps would be built quickly using automation
  • There would be minimal human involvement

But that wasn’t the case.

The Truth: Manual Labor Masquerading as AI

A Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that Builder.ai’s core development work was done by human engineers. The AI component was mostly cosmetic — a tool for collecting client input, not for actual code generation.
