Whether you are just starting out your career or 20 years in the field, there is a good chance you have wondered at least once what is it like working in a “big tech”. For this definition of big tech companies, I will use companies in FAANG/MATANA acronyms which include Meta(Facebook), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google, Tesla, and Nvidia. FAANG used to be considered the top tech companies, but recently some people are going with MATANA, but for our purposes, we will include both sets and maybe a few years from now there will be another acronym.
This article will cover the pros and cons of different highlighted parts of working in a big tech company as well as overall thoughts and tips.
Pros & Cons Of Working In Big Tech
If almost everyone has thought about working for a big tech company at least once, there must be many pros to actually working in one or it wouldn’t be as sought after. Also, many who work in big tech don’t always stay long. Let’s dive deeper into these ideas.
Pay
Good
This is probably one of the most obvious ones, so we are starting with it. Because these companies are so large and so demanding, they want the best talent and are willing to pay whatever price necessary for that talent. Many top tech positions at these companies make over half a million dollars annually. That is real life-changing money for a lot of people. It is not only their top positions that they aren’t afraid to pay for, most of their lower-level tech jobs are also 6 figures.
Bad
This is where the term golden handcuffs gets introduced. Often with the increased salary comes lifestyle creep which is where you end up upgrading some of your expenses. Now to keep up with this new lifestyle you may live in fear of losing your job knowing that other companies may not be able to afford to give you that same salary. You are now handcuffed to do whatever your job tells you because you need that job. Also, you may price yourself out of the market if you ever do want to leave unless you are willing to…
