“Tell me about yourself” is a common interview question that’s often used as an icebreaker. I have been on hundreds of interviews and each one always starts with this question. It’s an opportunity for you to provide a brief overview of your background, experience, and what makes you a strong candidate for the position. I used to mess this part up initially, but as I got more experienced and went on more interviews I started realizing better way to answer this question.

Here’s a structured way to approach:

Always smile, it helps breaks the relieve initial tension in both you and the interviewer. It also helps set the mood and tone for the rest of the conversation.

Start with a Brief Introduction:

Begin by sharing your name and a little about your background, such as your education and any relevant certifications.
Example: “Certainly. My name is [Your Name], and I recently graduated with a degree in [Your Field]. I also completed a certification in [Relevant Certification], which has equipped me with [mention skills or knowledge gained].”

Highlight Relevant Experience:

Keep it professional. The interviewer does not care that you have a dog or spend all of your time partying on the weekends.
Discuss any relevant work experience, internships, or projects that demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the field. Focus on accomplishments or skills that are directly related to the position you’re applying for.

Example: “During my time at [Previous Company/Internship], I had the opportunity to work on [specific projects or responsibilities]. This experience allowed me to develop strong skills in [mention specific skills], and I also had the chance to [mention any notable achievements].”
